Vendôme, city of water and lights

The Loir river is everywhere in the charming center of Vendôme with numerous canals, stone and wooden bridges…

At nightfall, come and stroll in a city of art and history and discover its exceptional historical patrimony sublimated by water and light.

The most daring among you can hunt the Saint Bienheuré dragon!

Washhouses

Along the Loir, you will be able to admire many washhouses, the remains of a by-gone era when women used to go to the river to wash their laundry…

You will notice that most of them have a hand-winch to adjust the pontoon according to the level of the water.

Some remarkable washhouses such as that of the Cordeliers in the Ronsard park in Vendôme, and the ones in Saint-Jacques-des-Guérets, Lavardin and Fréteval.

The troglodytic villages

Stairs, terraces, cellars, little streets, paths, houses, from Vendôme to Trôo, through Villiers-sur-Loir, Lavardin and les Roches-l’Évêque, troglodytic villages are present all along the way.

The “capital” troglodytic village of Trôo in the Loir-et-Cher department will charm you. Built in a rocky hill in the Middle-Ages, the village takes you on a fabulous journey with historical remains, gates and ramparts.

Visit the toglodytic ecomuseum of the Yuccas wine-cellar or stay overnight in a toglodytic guestroom!

Ronsard at Couture-sur-Loir

The poet Pierre de Ronsard was born in the Possonnière manor-house  of Couture-sur-Loir in the Vendôme area. Many of his poems were inspired by the Vendôme landscape especially by the Loir river alongside which he wanted to be buried (I’lsle Verte).
